A Dehua Blanc de Chine octagonal cup with incised anhua decoration - Transitional period.

Of flared form with four bracket feet. It has a finely incised anhua (secret decoration) of the Eight Horses of Mu Wang. According to Patrick Donnelly, the large cups were probably meant for wine, whereas the medium ones were used for tea drinking. Produced in Dehua kilns, Fujian province in the 17th Century.

 

Size: Height 6 cm, diameter 9.5 cm

Condition: Two insignificant chips to the rim (see pictures)

Provenance: Bought by the Swedish couple, Ingrid and Otto Olesen, in Shanghai in the 1930’s. Thence by decent.
