A small Yaozhou celadon moulded dish – Song Dynasty

The dish has gently curved lobed sides rising from a flat base to an everted rim. It is moulded to the interior with a peony medallion and encircled in each of the six lobes with a similar peony spray. It is covered overall with an even olive glaze.

 

Period: Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127)

Size: Diameter 9.2 cm, height 2 cm

Condition: Light wear, a repaired chip to the rim with a related hairline crack, approximately 3 cm long.

References: Similar dishes were found during the excavations of the Yaozhou kiln. A number of different designs were found, with both moulded and carved flower patterns.
