A white Cizhou-type cylindrical vase – Song - Yuan Dynasty - SOLD
Of cylindrical shape covered in a white slip and transparent glaze. The inside and base are unglazed, revealing the refined buff-colored body. This shape was produced from the Northern Song dynasty and onwards. It originates from northern China, possibly from a kiln in Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi or Xixia area. This shape is sometimes referred to as “Meiping”, even though the Meiping usually has a more rounded body.
Period: Song – Yuan Dynasty (907-1368)
Size: Height 32 cm
Condition: Good condition with wear and natural glaze crackling. A small spot of raised glaze probably caused by water penetration followed by freezing temperature (see last picture). No cracks or repairs found under UV-light.

References: Vases of this shape have been excavated in Gansu Province and are illustrated in Complete Collection of Ceramic Art unearthed in China – Gansu Qinghai Ningxia Yunnan Guizhou Xizang, Zhang Bai, Science Press, Bejing, 2008, plate 43 (dated to Xia dynasty) and plate 88 (dated to Yuan dynasty). However, clay seems somewhat different from this example.
