A Xing white glazed jar – Tang Dynasty

This bowl-shaped jar has a constricted mouth with rounded lip, sloping shoulders and a bulging belly. The hard, slightly coarse, body is greyish white. The flat foot is slightly concave. Both the interior and the upper part of the exterior are coated in a white slip and covered in a transparent glaze. The lower part of the outside body and the base are unglazed. These jars have been found in the excavations of the Xing kiln sites and can be dated to mid Tang.

 

Period: Tang dynasty (618-907)

Size: Height 8 cm, diameter at the widest place 13 cm

Condition: Good condition, wear and firing flaws, some discoloration to the glaze, especially to the interior, no cracks or repairs.

Provenance: From a German collection assembled in the 1960s
