An early Yue-type four-handled jar – Jin Dynasty
Of globular shape with a flat, slightly concave base. There are four square-shaped handles applied to the shoulder, and decoration consists of a horizontal incised line on the shoulder, and four iron spots on the rim. Made from high fired stoneware and covered in a green glaze. The lowest part of the body and the base are unglazed revealing the paste, which has developed a brown skin during firing.
Early green glazed jars like this were produced at several kilns in Zhejiang in the Six Dynasties period. Yuhang, Taizhou and Linhai kilns are a few examples.
Period: Jin Dynasty (266-420)
Size: Height 12 cm, diameter 14.5 cm
Condition: Glaze degraded from long time burial, no cracks or repairs found under UV-light.
