A Yue-type celadon “chicken head spout” ewer – Southern Dynasties - SOLD
The ewer is sturdily potted with an ovoid body rising to a waisted neck flaring to a dish-shaped rim. It is applied to the shoulder with two angular loop handles, a short spout in the form of a chicken-head, and a long-arched handle terminating in a dragon head grasping the mouth rim of the ewer. Covered allover with a pale green celadon glaze, stopping at the foot exposing the buff body on the concave base.
Period: Southern Dynasties (420-589)
Size: Height 26 cm
Condition: wear, overpaint to upper handle, mouth and cockscomb (probably restored)
Provenance: From a South German private collection, collected since the 1960s
