A Changsha ware celadon ewer with brown splashes – Tang Dynasty
The ewer has an ovoid form with a cylindrical neck with a flaring mouth rim. It has a large strap-handle to the rear and two smaller strap-handles to the sides, each formed from three rolled lengths of clay joined together. The spout on the shoulder has an octagonal tapered form. It is covered in a pale olive-green glaze and below the two side handles and the spout there are areas splashed in a brown glaze. The flat base is unglazed. It was produced in the Changsha kilns, Hunan.
Period: Tang dynasty (618-907 AD), 9th century
Size: Height 19.5 cm, diameter mouth 10.6 cm
Condition: Good condition considering age, glaze condition is very good, wear and firing flaws, three restored sections to the rim and two repairs to the handle (see pictures with UV-light).
