A Ding carved lotus dish – Northern Song / Jin Dynasty

The shallow rounded sides rising from a short tapering foot to a flared rim, freely carved to the interior with a large blossoming lotus and leaf in a pond within an incised medallion. It is covered overall in an ivory-white glaze pooling in tear-drops to the exterior. The mouth rim is left unglazed revealing the fine porcelain body. This dish comes with a custom fit box.

 

Period: Northern Song / Jin dynasty (12th-13th Century)

Size: Diameter 18 cm, height 3.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition, minor manufacturing imperfections and typical irregularities to the footring, no cracks or repairs found under UV-light.

References: A related dish, attributed to the Ding kilns, was excavated at the Tuchengzi city site in Inner Mongolia, and it’s illustrated in Complete Collection of Ceramic Art unearthed in China – Inner Mongolia, Zhang Bai, Science Press, Bejing, 2008, Plate 119 (last photo).
