A straw-glazed jar – Tang Dynasty

The broad baluster body rising from a slightly splayed, flat base to gently rounded shoulders surmounted by a waisted neck and everted rim. The upper part is covered in a clear, pale-green glaze over a white slip, stopping on the lower part of the body to reveal the buff body. This shape was popular in the Tang dynasty, and these jars were fired in many northern kilns. They were produced with various glazes and of a wide range of quality.

 

Period: Tang dynasty (618-907)

Size: Height 14 cm

Condition: Good condition, wear and firing flaws, minor chips to the rim and footring, no cracks or repairs.

Provenance: From a German collection assembled in the 1960s
