A carved Qingbai conical ‘floral’ bowl – Song Dynasty
The bowl is very thinly potted (weight is only 191 g) with conical sides and carved on the interior with a flower pattern. It is covered overall with a glossy, translucent glaze of pale-blue colour except for the base. This shape, often called bamboo-hat shape, was produced over a long period of time, from Northern to Southern Song period. Several examples have been found during excavations in the Hutian kiln complex, Jiangxi.
Period: Song Dynasty, 12th Century
Size: Diameter 17.5 cm, height 6 cm
Condition: Good condition, light wear and crazing on the inside, one hairline crack going down from the rim, approximately 26 mm long (see last pictures), no further cracks or repairs found under UV-light.
Provenance: From an old Bavarian private collection, collected since the 1960s.
