A blue and white phoenix dish – Ming Dynasty
With a thick glaze and underglaze blue decoration of a phoenix standing in a garden, the rim decorated with beribboned auspicious symbols and floral motifs. The exterior is also decorated with floral motifs. From a Jingdezhen kiln.
This type of dish was extensively exported in the 16th century to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and America. Similar examples have been found in the wrecks of European ships that plied between Asian ports and Europe and America.
Period: Ming dynasty, Wanli reign (last quarter of the 16th century)
Size: Diameter 15.3 cm
Condition: Good condition, light wear and some glazing flaws, one hairline crack, ca 3 cm going down from the rim (see last picture), a chip to the footring, no repairs found under UV-light.
