A brown-glazed jar – Tang Dynasty

The rounded sides rise from a circular foot to a wide shoulder to a short neck with an everted rim. It is covered in a speckled brown glaze stopping short of the foot. These jars were produced by kilns in Henan, Hebei, Shaanxi and Shanxi, and the shape is quite typical of the period.

 

Period: Tang dynasty (618-907)

Size: Height 19.7 cm

Condition: Excellent condition, minor wear and firing flaws, no cracks or repairs found under UV-light.

Provenance: From the collection of Johan Lilliehöök (1865‑1949), thence by descent. Johan Lilliehöök was a Swedish lawyer and diplomat. He was posted in Shanghai 1922‑1932 as the Swedish consul general and his Chinese collection was acquired at that time.
