A Changsha ware celadon glazed jar with brown and green dotted decoration – Tang Dynasty

Of cylindrical form with an everted rim. Neck is short on a rounded shoulder, supporting a pair of loop handles. The finely crackled glaze is pale greenish-brown and highlighted with dark iron and pale green dots around the body. The inside is fully glazed, and the concave base is unglazed. It was produced in the Changsha kilns, Hunan, in the Tang Dynasty.

 

Period: Tang dynasty (618-907 AD)

Size: Height 12 cm, diameter c. 10 cm at the widest place

Condition: Good condition consistent with age. No visible cracks or repairs. Rim and foot rim slightly warped from firing.

References: There are several comparable jars in the Lammett Collection, illustrated in “Tang Ceramics Changsha Kilns”, Timothy See-Yiu Lam, Lammett Arts, 1990, Hong Kong, colour plates 176-178. A comparable jar was excavated from lady Wang’s tomb dated to 862 at Houkeng village, Xiamen city, Fujian, which is illustrated in Complete Collection of Ceramic Art unearthed in China - Fujian, Zhang Bai, Science Press, Bejing, 2008, Plate 49.
