A famille rose yellow ground “flower” medallion bowl – Republic period
Decoration consists of flowers, lanterns, and ears of grain among other things. It has a Guangxu mark on the base.
Terese Tse Bartholomew has identified the combination of a lantern (denglong) and ears of grain (wugu) as a rebus meaning 'May there be a bumper harvest of the five grains.' See her Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art (Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, 2006), p. 241, entry 8.16.1.
Period: Republic period (1912-1949)
Size: Dia. 12.7 cm, height. 5.8 cm
Condition: Overall good condition except for a shallow star-shaped non protruding crack to the base approx. 2 cm long.
Provenance: Acquired in the 1950's from Eskil Ahlberg, thence by descent, sold by Uppsala Auktionskammare, Sweden in 2017
