A jar with three loop handles – Sui Dynasty

Of oval shape with flat shoulders, a short neck and flat base. There are three loop handles applied to the shoulder. High fired stoneware applied with a dark olive-green glaze. These jars were fired by several northern kilns in the Sui Dynasty. The most famous being Xiangzhou in Henan and Xing in Hebei, but they were also produced by kilns in Shandong and Shanxi.

 

Period: Sui Dynasty (581-618)

Size: Height 14.5 cm

Condition: Good condition, a few chips to the foot, possible repairs to the handles, no cracks found under UV-light.

References: A larger but very similar jar was excavated from a Sui Dynasty tomb in Ciyaogou, Lincheng County, Hebei. It is attributed to Xing kilns and illustrated in Xing kiln in its Millenium, Zhao Qinggang and Zhang Zhizhong, Cultural Relics Press, 2007, page 46.
