A Longquan celadon lotus bowl – Southern Song Dynasty

This bowl has deep upright sides rising from a slightly tapered foot and the exterior is carved with a broad band of overlapping petals with raised central ridges. It is totally covered in a thick olive-green glaze, except for the footring and rim where the light-grey clay is visible. Originally with a cover. Nice high pitch when tapped with a finger.

 

Period: Late Southern song dynasty (13th Century)

Size: Diameter 13.3 cm, height 8 cm

Condition: Good condition, light wear and firing impurities, A few chips to the rim and footring (see pictures), some areas of glaze pitting on the outside, no cracks or repairs found under UV-light.

Provenance: From an old German collection, purchased prior to 1977 in Berlin
