A large Thai persimmon-shaped covered box with carved design – Sawankhalok kilns, 14th-16th Century

This stoneware lidded box is shaped like a persimmon fruit and carved with a vine scroll pattern. It is covered in a transparent glaze and the decoration is highlighted with a brown glaze. The flat, slightly concave, base is unglazed and the inside is partly glazed. Produced in Sukhothai province, Thailand.


Period: 14th-16th Century

Size: Dia 12.4 cm, height 9.8 cm

Condition: Good condition with age related wear, chip to the lid, two repaired flakes to the shoulder of the body where the lid rests (see two last pictures).
